cell phone charging

Do I need anything more than a voltage and prong adapter to charge my phone while in Turkey ? I have been told you also need a transformer. True ?

Your phone's charger should have its specifications either stamped into the plastic or printed on a sticker that's glued on. If it says 110-240v. then you don't need anything but a plug end adapter from 2 flat prongs to 2 round prongs. If it's only good with 110v. or 120v. then you need a transformer. I think all those chargers are now made for dual voltages.

I have an iphone and all I needed in Turkey was the adaptor. Actually in the last 5 or 6 years with a number of different phones that was all I needed, or if I rented a car I just charged in the car.

Peter, both previous replies are great. If your wall charger is rated to 240V and you only want to take one charger then leave the car charger home even though it takes little space.

peter, I'm not sure what you're referring to as a "voltage and prong adapter", as I've never seen a product of that type. As suggested in the first reply, the first thing you need to do is check the Input Voltage specifications on the Charger for your phone. If these state "100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz", then all you'll need is an inexpensive Plug Adapter. You can easily obtain these from Magellans which is located in California. There are a few other issues that need to be addressed. To begin with, which cell network are you with? If you're with Verizon or Sprint, your phone won't even work in Turkey (or anywhere else in Europe). If you're using AT&T or T-Mobile, you'll need to ensure that your phone is a quad-band model. The other issue is whether you're using a Smartphone such as an iPhone. If you use the data roaming features (ie: web surfing, E-mail, etc.) the roaming charges can be HUGE (one traveller in this part of the world recently received a bill for $37,000 for 2.5 weeks of data roaming on her iPhone while travelling in Egypt). Happy travels!
