We are getting conflicting information on renting a car in Dubrovnik and driving to Montenegro. Some folks (and travel articles) say we can't do it, others say fine as long as it is an agency with offices in Montenegro, others say any of the agencies will do it. Has anyone done this and were there any hassles? Thanks!

Check it out on the talk section of fodors.com They have lots of info on it. I know people do it, it's a big chance, but they do it.

In Sept. 2006 we rented a car through CAA (AAA in US) 1 month before departure. They used AutoEurope as the broker but the car rental agency was actually EuropCar. We picked up the car at Dubrovnik airport and traveled to Montenegro (4 days), Bosnia (2 hours - land bridge for Croatia), Croatia (4 days) and Slovenia (4 days). No problems renting and no problems driving to other countries (just inform them of itinerary at time of reservation). Please note that the highway police in Montenegro can be a bit agressive in issuing tickets (unsafe lane change fine of $25).
