Car Rental Praha (Prague)

Anyone had any experience with renting a car in Praha? I looked into getting insurance through Travel Guard as Rick suggests instead of the company's CDW, is there anything else I should be aware. Also any recommendations on a company? Thanks

Hi Michelle. I've had good luck with both Hertz and Avis throughout Europe. Check their websites. Enjoy your trip!

Michelle, I rented from Prague airport with no problems. I did buy the extra insurance through my American express card. It is only about $25 for a month of so...can't remember exactly, but it's the most reasonable I found. I use Priceline to compare all the companies and go with the cheapest. I think in Prague it was Budget.

Terry,
I've gotten a quote from Travel Guard, I read on one the rental sites that if you decline the CDW insurance that they will hold the amount of the car to you credit card. Did you have an issue with this since you had your own insurance? Thanks again, I will check priceline as well, Budget is who I've been looking at.

Michelle, They all put different 'hold' amounts on your credit card. That only becomes an issue if you are using a debit card or if you do not have a lot clear on your card at the time of rental. If you have an Amex with no preset limit then it is not a problem. It is often times hard to even find out what they will be doing as their policies are not clearly stated and their goal is to sell you the insurance. If you are traveling with other people and can split the cost of the insurance sometimes it is just easier to buy it (which I have done on a few occasions if I was not the only driver) By yourself it can really add, but if you are splitting it, maybe not too bad.

We rented from Europcar and picked it up at the airport. We got the CDW that Rick recommended in case of major problems. The rental agent did tell us that if anything happened we would have to deal with Travel Guard on our own. I'm "guessing" that we would have to pay for any damages and TG would reimburse us. It was cheaper to buy a GPS with Europe maps in the US than rent one from the company plus they might not have one available when you get there.
