Car Rental in Katakolon (Olympia)

I keep hearing about a 40 Euro car rental at katakolon. Is there moped rentals as well? Otherwise the normal car agencies charge way too much....

I don't know about rentals, but I have heard there is a train from Katakolon to Olympia that is very cheap. We are planning on taking it when our cruise ship lands.

My friends and I hired a taxi at the port that took us to Olympia and picked us up for the return trip.

Cost was about 100 Euros with a stop at a souviner shop.

There are a couple of places in Katakolon where you can rent a scooter or an ATV. However, if you are heading to Olympia it is not ideal really to go for a mopet, as you need to drive for around 25 km on the highway. By far the most convenient way to explore is to rent a car, as taxis are unreasonably expensive (around 100 euros round tripfor a 4-seater taxi which is willing to wait for you anly for an hour, which is not enough time at all for taking a proper look of the archaeological site, the museum and the modern village of olympia). There are 2 rent a car places at Katakolo, Avis and a local company. I picked Avis as they offered me full insurance something that i definately needed driving in a foreign country, even though the route was really straight forward.

There is a train, as mentioned, from Katakalon to Olympia, and if I remember correctly, the cost is about €5. It is a short walk to the train station at the edge of the town. Be aware that as a visitor from the USA you must have an International Drivers Permit as well as your US licence in order to drive in Greece. An IDP can be had for about $20 from the AAA.
