Any advantages to Avis vs a local car company? I am thinking that a company like Avis would have better cars, better support etc in Turkey. Am I off on that? Any other car companies you would recommend?

Autoeurope is very reliable and their coverage area includes Turkey. That's who I'd use.

What about some of the local companies or on-line outfits like Best Car Hire Turkey? Does anyone have experience with these?

I'm thinking about renting a car at the Izmir airport and driving to Selcuk. Using Selcuk as a base to explore the area. Will I be able to use my USA drivers license or will I need to get an international license?

Regarding an International license, my understanding is that it is really just a translation into multiple languages of your local driver's license. Although you don't absolutely need it, it can save you some headaches if you get pulled over. It is easy to obtain and not expensive, so why not.
