Car rental - cheaper to book online or upon arrival

I will be in Crete for 3 full days and would like to rent a car in order to explore Chania/Samaria Gorge and Elafonissi Beach. Which rental agency do you recommend? Thanks!

You'll get a better rate by waiting, especially with tourism on a downswing this year. You can use the price quote from one agent to bargain with another until you get the price you want. Be sure to go to your local AAA office to pick up an International Driving Permit, no test or membership required, for $15 plus a photo fee if you don't bring 2 passport photos with you.

While you may be able to bargain at the last minute, I would make a reservation at the cheapest place, just to be sure you have something. Just don't prepay anything and be sure to cancel if you find something cheaper.

Jennifer - Check to see if your hotel can refer you to a car rental agency. Many times you get better rates with a local referral. One of our hotels in Crete had some kind of relationship with the people at Sixt so we got rates less than 1/2 the price of what we could find on our own - in advance and on arrival. The same thing happened in Santorini... We rented a car for a day based on a referral from the owner of our accomodations for much less than we could find on our own. For Crete, we had reservations in advance but the one in Santorini was arranged just the day before upon our arrival.
