In April 2011 we will be flying into Athens from Santorini and I would like to know if we can rent a car at Athens Airport and if the airport area is a bad area to be driving a car in? We will be driving the car from the airport to Nafplio.
Driving from the airport to Nafplio is fine. You'll be on the National Highway, E94, all the way, but you really want to make sure you don't drive through the city center. Athens is difficult enough if you're familiar with the streets. Traffic is crazy and parking is next to impossible. So if you rent a car with a GPS be sure it doesn't route you through the city, but around it.
We rented a car through economycarrentals.com and the company we actually picked up the car from was Auto Union. They have a shuttle that picked us up at the Athens airport and took us to their office about 10 minutes away. There we signed all the papers, packed up the car and headed on our way. The drive to Nafplio is fairly simple - you don't go into the city but skirt it on major highways. When we returned the car, we took it directly to their office and were given a ride back to the airport. We were very happy with the car and the company.
thank you both for your imput. Do you know any of the car rental companies at the airport?
Check out autoeurope.com for your car rental. They're very helpful and reliable. Also, the drive from Athens International to Nafplion will not take you into the city of Athens - you will bypass it. But a GPS is still very useful.
Diana - Most of the major corporate rental companies are at the Athens airport. You can do an Expedia search and compare.
