car rental across borders

Hi, has anyone rented a car in, say, Krakow and driven it to Slovakia (thinking of the spiis region)? Is that doable, or with a Polish license plate am I a target for car theft?

Hertz, for one, will let you rent in Poland and drive into Slovakia. But you should plan to return the car in Poland to avoid the very substantial one-way drop-off fees if you return the car in Slovakia. I don't know if your Polish plate will make you a theft target or not. Just be sure you're covered with theft insurance. One person's experience doesn't tell you much, but we drove through Slovakia a few years ago with a car we rented in Prague - and never felt the slightest bit unsafe.

The general rule is never leave anything in your car as the risk of a break-in is very high (just about everywhere in Europe). However, that is not always possible. Never leave anything visible - even something relatively minor. You might try locking the luggage and maybe looping it to something in the car so no one can take the bags. But they can quickly cut open the bags and take what they want. So take anything of value (cameras, laptops, etc...) with you at all times.
