anyone out there have advice on renting a car for the day in katakolon and driving around the countryside. we are on a cruise ship and have no desire to see olympia. any thoughts would be appreciated. rich
The best place for your question would be cruisecritic.com. Look for the port of Katakolon. When we were there we didn't want to go to Olympia either so we just stayed in the town, shopping, strolling, having lunch & wine and watching a local girl's wedding party as it entered the church. The bride herself finally arrived and tottered up the stairs to the church on her stiletto heels, aided by a stalwart male relative on either side of her. We all applauded madly.
We rented a car in Katakolon last year. It is very easy, there are several companies right off of the dock, maybe a two minute walk. You really can't miss them, Katakolon is a tiny place! I think that we paid 80 Euro for a large van to hold the six of us for the day.
We arrived recently by a cruise ship to Katakolon and we rented a car from AVIS, right opposite the port. The AVIS staff was very polite and helpful, and their suggestions on where to go and where not to go were spot on Overall, the quality of service provided by AVIS was above average. The route to Olympia was really straight forward (2 turns route), and it is only 25 minutes drive. By having a car we had the freedom of doing everything we wished to do, at our own time. We felt that we took full advantage of the day, in a very economic way. For more information about Katakolon you can look at www.katakolon.gr and www.katakolo-rentacar.com
Apart from Olympia we visited a really impressive winery called Mercouri which was suggested both by our cruise company and by the AVIS staff. It is only 10 minutes away from the village of Katakolon. In the afternoon we went to a really nice cafe (I do not remember its name). Below the cafe was a really nice sandy beach where we went for a swim.
Be sure to go to your local AAA office to pick up an International Driving Permit, no test or membership required, for $15 plus a photo charge if you don't bring 2 passport photos with you.
