Can we get to Knosos from Chania.

Our Cruise ship will be docking in Chania, Crete. There are no excursions offered to Knosos, so I was wondering if it is too far to comfortably do in a day on our own. Any other ideas? I love Ancient places.

From Chania Knossos is about a 3-hour drive east with a rental car.

If you don't want to rent a car, you can do it by bus. You'd have to take a bus from Chania to Heraklion, then a local bus out to Knossos. There's a bus from Chania to Heraklion just about every hour. Going by bus will take at least 3 1/2 hours. To do the Knossos site justice, plan on a good 2-3 hours. It is a very interesting site. If you drive, watch out for sharpsters along the Knossos road trying to steer you into their unofficial pay parking lots. Kind of like trying to park near Wrigley Field on a game day. If you drive, getting out of Chania can be a little crazy. Have the rental agency give you a good local map or a GPS. Once you're out of Chania, the highway to Heraklion is easy.

Thanks so much for the info, I think it would probably be smarter for us to stay closer to Chania. Never mind, there's always next time! Bev

I think you are right to stay closer to Chania. We were At Knossos in October, also as a stop on a cruise. Although it was nice enough, I would not recommend traveling three hours each way to see it.

We are having a change from looking at ruins and going to The Manousakis Winery very reasonable 15 euro includes lunch. Very good reviews. I think I remember a site called www.greeka.dot.com. We are there in July off a cruise too. Enjoy
