I will be in Budapest for a week in early June. I'd like a budget hotel, which to me is about $50 U.S. or less. Am I dreaming?
It should also have a lift, as I have a tricky knee... and since I am a woman alone, I need a rather safe neighborhood.
If this sounds like I'm dreaming, give me your suggestions for budget hotels and I'll see if I can round up some more euros....
I stayed at the Marco Polo hostel last summer, a shared room for about 20 euros a night. A nice private layout for the rooms, but no breakfast. They have single rooms also.
Ibis hotels are generally nice, and do have lifts. There are several in the center of Budapest, with probably the Centrum, Emke, and Heroes Square all suitable.

They range from $53 to $68 a night, so comfortably within your budget. I would go for the Emke as it is in a very safe area, lots of restaurants nearby, and the Metro 2 and Trams all run nearly at the door. Deak Ter, where you can transfer to any Metro line, is only two stops away. The Trams are very easy to use as well, and they are right at the hotel.
I stayed at the Easy Hotel. It was 15 euros/night, clean, very close to the metro and in a great neighbourhood. I was also solo and felt very safe. The staff were very helpful with suggestions and directions on where to go.
It was very clean, but no frills. I found it perfect and it was cheaper than most hostels!
I'd suggest the Downtown Oasis, which is adjecent to the Jewish District (http://www.downtownoasis.net/). You can see the synagogue from the common balcony. We felt extremely safe there, and Judit (who owns the place with her sister, running it with the help of friends) is a wealth of knowledge. It's an extremely large apartment divided into private rooms, with a shared kitchen. Some rooms have an en suite bathroom, others share one large WC (which was very clean and easily accessible). There is a lift, but it's very tiny. Definitely serviceable unless you have issues with small spaces. There are great dining and night life opportunities around the area, as well.
I heartedly agree with the recommendation of the Ibis Hotel. I travel alone too. Centrum has indoor parking. Skip breafast. A McDonald's is just down the street.
It wasz very easy to move around the city from the Ibis.
Don't miss the park on the outskirts of the city with the statues from the Communist era. Rick covers it well in his book.
Also, do the sunset cruise on the Danube.

We stayed in the Astoria area, which was convenient to Metro stops and walking to the river. We rented an apt. from Marton at Budapesting, which was very reasonable. The food in Budapest was wonderful at the non-tourist RS suggested restaurant rows. Have fun, we liked Budapest.
my best friend and I visited in June and stayed at
the Hotel Orion. A modest, but clean place, well
located near the bridges and easy walking back and
forth between Buda and Pest. The cost for the room
for two people(with breakfast) was $128.
Mercure (also of the Accor chain along with Ibis) has several in the center of the city. (accorhotels.com)
I would suggest to go for the smaller family run hotels, they are much more fun than the big chains.
We stayed at Leo Panzio close to everything. From the outside i doesn't look like much, but once you go inside, the rooms were classy and extremely confortable. We really were happy and its a budget also.
We loved the Astoria Residence, I can highly recommend it!
