Please send me a link to retail stores selling trekking poles to walk the Samaria Gorge. (I am not checking luggage from Seattle to Greece.)
I walked the Samaria Gorge years ago. I don't remember that it was so rugged that I needed trekking poles. I think a cane (walking stick) would be allowed on an airplane as long as you are using it. It will fit in the overhead.
Someone recalls, poles not needed... well, depends on your knees & age. I did the Imbros Gorge (shorter, similar underfoot conditions). Main challenge, rocks the size of soccer balls require constant balancing act, tiring the knees -- if I had not grabbed a crooked stick from under an olive tree just at the entrance I would have been exhausted. TWO sticks would have been better.
I have never seen retail stores in Chania selling trekking poles. You DO know there are collapsible ones that go down to about 24" right? Any problem putting them in your baggage? Would they be considered "dangerous weapons"??? If so, then do as I did... but I advise you to find a tree area near your lodgings the night before, not wait until you arrive at entry to Samaria Gorge. Problem solved.
