I've been to several central/eastern countries and I'm considering a 4 day sidetrip to Bulgaria this time (leaving from Vienna). I'm looking for some general feedback from anyone who has been there. (e.g. did you spend all your time in Sofia or what other cities do you recommend visiting)

We did Sofia, Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo - but spent 6-7 days. With only 4 days at your disposal, I would limit it to Plovdiv and Sofia.

If your travel plans are within the next few months then Sofia and Plovdiv, easily reached by train or bus from Sofia, will be the best choices. If you are going later in the spring when the weather will be warmer then a little trip to the Black Sea beaches is always nice and can be easily managing using the overnight train from Sofia to Burgas. Nice trips from Sofia to the Rila Monastery or down to the Bulgarian wine country around Melnik are easy from Sofia but not so easy from Plovdiv.
