Budweiser

Ceske Budejovice is somewhat near Prague. Is there a tour of the brewery? Is it worth visiting this city for a St. Louis Bud fan?

There is a tour - you can find more information at http://budweiser-budvar.cz/en/navstevnicke-centrum/prohlidky-pivovaru.html. Ceske Budejovice, by the way, is south of Prague and is very near Cesky Krumlov, which is a very popular tourist destination. If you're planning a trip to Cesky Krumlov, it would probably be worth a stop there (although I have to say I have never been there - getting ready to leave in one week), so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. :)

Ceske Budejovice is about 3 hours south of Prague. German name is Budweis therefore Budweiser. It has pretty historical center. I think it's worth visit. Nearby is beautiful chateau Hluboka. Also famous Cesky Krumlov. If it's worth to visit for a St.Louis Bud fan I cannot judge. But those two Budweisers are incomparable. Budweiser from St.Louis tastes like yellow carbonated water (sorry), Budweiser from Budweis is considered by many as one of the best beers. Tastes are subjective. Compare yourself. You can buy real Budweiser even in the US under the name Czechvar. But of course beer in C.B. on tap is even better.

When in St. Louis go for Bud. In Prague there are many better choices so take advantage of this opportunity to discover them.

Ceske Budejovic is pretty much a work-a-day Czech town. They have a nice little square with the requisite plague column but nothing was very interesting. A nice lunch with beer was about $5. Prices really fall outside Prague. I don't know about brewery tours. Cesky Krumlov is far more interesting and it's definitely more touristy.

If you're really into Budweiser and beer I think it is worth it. With a car you can tour Bohemia as well. There is a nice castle called Hluboka not too far away. Check on line for brewery tours and tell the people at the brewery you are from St. Louis. They are very nice folks. The brewery also owns a hotel on the square in Ceske Budejovice. Believe or not, there is also another beer called Budweiser brewed by another brewer not as well known as Budvar. Budvar is extremely good beer.

The beer in Prague is, my personal opinion, some of the best in the world. Crisp and full of flavor. Beer is to the C. Republic like Guinness is to Ireland, Sweet Tea to a resident of the Deep South, Plate Lunch to a Hawaiian, BBQ (pick your region and preference) and well, you get the point. A tour of a brewery? Well, once you seen the workings of one commercial brewery you've pretty much seen them all in the broad brush although not in the particulars (lecture on the ratio of hops/absence thereof, ancient brewing methods demonstrated and hop ripening floors the exception). Some brewery facilities are fun destinations for the old buildings, abbeys, food etc. All this said, there is so much to see/do in Prague itself!
