Budapest, worth a look?

We am going to Italy June of 2011. Thought about taking a Plane or Train to Budapest. We wanted to visit one other country while in Europe.

Well if you have time for the train trip or you can find a good fare and fly...heck yeah! Budapest is definitely worth a visit; it's beautiful, easy to get around in, and the people are great!

Definitely worth you time. It is an amazing city, and easily can consume four days on its own. However, it is not exactly convenient to Italy. Depending on where you are ending, maybe you should consider Switzerland, Slovenia, or France, if you are just looking to see another country?

Budapest is great. Castle Hill, dinner cruises on the Danube, strolling the Vaci Utca and the Central Market, and - most fun of all - the Szechenyi Baths.
If you go, you're in for a great experience.

Airfares seem reasonable from Rome to BUD. Less than $100.00. Train is more. I think BUD would have a exotic feel compared to rest of Easern Europe. I would really like to include the city in my trip.

Budapest was great. Do pick up info from Rick's books as we searched out areas that were recommended in his book and really felt we connected more with the people and city - particularly when it came to the restaurants. There are "touristy" areas and then the areas where the local people eat. Huge difference! Food was much better and cost less! Very enjoyable.

If you are looking for something "different" - try to visit Istanbul sometime. Right up there as one of my favorite cities! But quite a bit farther. Croatia was spectacular as well - and very close to Italy.

To answer your headline bluntly: Helllllll yessssss. Loved Budapest. And get into one of the thermal baths. I swear it took all my travel pain away.

Instead of touring St Stephen's Cathedral during the day, buy concert tickets. They turned on all the lights well before the concert began, and it was possible to take photos. Then I just sat back - smack dab in the middle of the church - and enjoyed the music while admiring the art and architecture.

Budapest is one of my favorite cities in Europe. I've been there 4 times to date and have found something new during each trip. In fact, last year I specifically went to Budapest to celebrate my birthday at Trattoria Toscana. It's ironic that my favorite Italian restaurant is in Hungary; and, I've been to Italy many times! Don't miss going to Budapest.

We were surprised at how much we really enjoyed Budapest. The baths are not to be missed. Also loved Trattoria Toscana. Restaurant prices were lower than many cities and right now the USD is looking very strong against the Hungarian $$. The city has an old world elegant charm and as another poster said the people are very friendly. Great transportation system too.

The city is worth more than a look, a few days can be easily spent. Don't miss the fine thermal spas, especially Margaret Island.

For a sneak peak at eating establishments and general sights Andrew Zimmerman of Bizarre Foods just did a segment on Discovery channel. I think it is a gd advert for visiting Buda and Pest.
