We have a 9month old baby and were thinking of a 10 day holiday to Prague and Budapest. I wanted to know how baby friendly these cities. is there enough of an ambience to soak in so that if out of fatigue we are not able to really do the sites we still feel satiated? How far are the main attractions from each other and are taxis easily available and affordable? Background info: We're both quite enthusiastic about to travel to europe and in general find my stamina level doubles when I'm there. The husband is a moderate. Baby is not exceptionally troublesome but his laundry, washing bottles, three fresh meals per day etc do amount to a fair bit of work.
Hi Shruti, I like what you said about your energy doubling when you travel, I'm the same way though I've never traveled with a baby:) There's more than enough ambiance and charm in both cities to soak in if you can't get around as well as you'd like. But with a baby along, I think Budapest will be easier to deal with than Prague. It is spread out enough that it doesn't feel crowded the way Prague can, but it's still fairly walkable. There are nice wide boulevards and promenades as well as big squares, all with plentiful benches for resting and "taking it all in", especially on the Pest side. On the Buda side which is hillier, there's a funicular you can ride to the top and back. Part of what is so beautiful and charming about Prague - narrow medieval lanes, cobbled streets - is part of what makes it feel more crowded and difficult to get around in. There aren't as many bench filled squares in Prague, but lot's of fun outdoor cafes for resting and people-watching. Both have great public transportation. I didn't take a taxi in Prague, but took one on two occasions in Budapest without any problems. I've read on this board that Budapest taxi drivers don't have the best reputation, but I had good experiences in both cases. In both cities, it's the overall charm that draws most people more than a list of "must-see" sites though there is plenty to see and do. So wandering around at your own speed and on your own (and baby's) schedule would work just fine. Happy Travels!
I had 4 nights each in Budapest and Prague, and found that plenty of time to get in some early sightseeing, only to be able to chill out in the evenings. I did not have a baby with me. I found Budapest more spread out than Prague, requiring the use of the metro subway to get around. The subway entrance was with stairs and I did not see any elevator if you were to have a stroller. Prague was very walkable, as we did not take any public transportation while there except to and fro hotel. I would think that B&P with a baby is doable, IMO.
I second the answers above. Take particular note of the comment about the narrow lanes and cobblestones of Prague. Prague is a very 'happening' city with a lot of energy - it is where every european student wants to be. Budapest is less congested and hectic. In Budapest, one feels more of the presence of the locals and less of the tourists. We found the locals to be very helpful and friendly. We made friends with several (despite the language issues) during our visit. We did use the bus, subway (Metro), and tram during our visit. We had no problem but in all cases there were steps required. I can't help with taxis.
I would urge you to try both cities. Especially try for a central lodging. In your shoes, I would go to Prague first and then Budapest which may be a little less stressful.
