Budapest tp Krakow transportation

We have been reviewing how to get from Budapest to Krakow. Bus does not seem to run on days we want to leave and train appears to take 10 to 11 hours. Does anyone have a suggestion for an interesting one day stop by train between those two cities that way we could split up the trip a little ?
Or has anyone taken the regional airlines between those cities and how was the experience ?? thank you

You can have one day stop in Bratislava or Olomouc.

We are dealing with same issue for this summer, and have based our plans around being able to take the Friday afternoon Orangeways Bus. It appears to be 23 Euro/per seat, leaves 14:00, arrives 21:30. This is preferable to the much longer and much more expensive train ride, and we did not want to do a stop-over.
As best as we could find, there are no direct flights between the two. The simplest, but costliest, is Budapest to Warsaw to Krakow, via LOT, which at least gives several options per day in terms of leaving Budapest. The budget airlines go a much longer route, and do not fly every day..

Have you thought about taking an overnight train in a sleeper compartment? That way you wouldn't miss a day travelling, and you'd have the hotel night covered too. There's a direct to Krakow from Budapest.

Don't overlook flights. We caught a cheap flight on Malev from Krakow to Budapest. I think the rates are different going the other way but still worth looking into. Both great cities and your time on a train or bus can be better spent enjoying them.

I do not see any Malev flights between Budapest and Krakow. This is from the Malev site. Can you direct to where you found this?

Our flight was 4 yrs ago and apparently Malev dropped the flight. LOT has flights to Krakow that stop briefly in Warsaw. Not quite as reasonable as the Malev flight was but you still avoid a long overnight on a train.

You may have made your decision by now. But I thought I'd let you know that I just booked our one way flights from Budapest to Krakow with LOT. The flight departs at 9:30 and arrives at 13:10. think that there is also a later flight. The cost was around $300 each. But it was the fastest way there I could find. And by getting there at 1:10pm, it gives you an extra afternoon there. Ashley

But the train is at night and you have to sleep anyhow.

When we looked into a train four years ago, we found that the ride was long and disjointed. Seems to me that we were looking at connecting someplace in almost the middle of the night and actually changing trains. We decided that flying, getting to our destination rested, was worth the extra cost. Don't rule out a train but watch for any unusual connections.
