Budapest / Prague / Not Enough Time

My wife and I are flying into Budapest in July . We are renting a car and have 10 days before I have to work in Debrecen for a month. Thinking of spending 3 or 4 days in Budapest and 3 or 4 in Prague and looking for interesting things in between for the other 2 to 4 days. We have Rick's books for each city, but would be interested in off the tourist path pub / music recommendations.

Interests: Outdoors / hiking
Live music (classical / jazz/ folk / rock before the 80's)
Maybe B and B in a village with interesting points of interest nearby (scenery / castles etc)
Not sophisticated, but enjoy architecture / history / culture of all varieties.

The direct train from Prague to Budapest takes 7 hours and runs through Bratislava. Aside from that city, I haven't visited any stops that are directly on the way. The smaller towns that Rick covers in the books you have represent a bit of a detour from this main route. In the Czech Republic, our next stop is usually Cesky Krumlov, but you may be able to fit in Konopiste castle and Ceske Budejovice on the way. From CK, you'll probably take a shuttle bus (p. 231) to either Linz or Vienna to catch a train to Budapest.
