My husband and I are planning to make a day trip to Budapest from Vienna, will probably take a really early train to Budapest and the 9pm train back. Can anyone recommend a nice walk that would go through most of the sights in Budapest ? Mostly interested in sightseeing, eating and probably a boat ride. Thanks !!
We also had only one day and took a bus tour. It was a good way to get a peek at Budapest. Then we took a tram to the castle (Buda side). Do try "Unicum" a herbal liquor in a dark green bottle which is their, I don't know but seems to be, most famous liquor. Order one only (as an after dinner drink). My husband said my face was priceless upon taking a sip and it truly left me speechless. He asked how it tasted and all I could say was "ah ah ah". Worth the experience. (P.S. Our son liked it so there you go.)
Andrassy would be the avenue for a nice walk. Can't comment on the boat ride since we did not do one. The market was a must see for us as was St Matthias church near Buda Castle. The baths probably would not be possible on a day trip. We loved the Duran sandwich shops for a quick and inexpensive lunch. There is a very good and untouristy restaurant near the river and Margrit Island (Pest side) that translates to The Little Cuckoo--wonderful Hungarian cuisine in a cozy atmospere.
We used Legenda, recommended in Rick's books, for a boat ride. We really loved it. The nighttime cruise was amazing, but it looks like you'll be en route back to Vienna around that time. The day cruises offer some down time at Margaret Island, if I'm not mistaken. They were a great value and a great time! Plus, you get a discount if you have a Rick Steves book. Andrassy Ut would be a great place to stroll. Budapest is fairly large, at least in my eyes, so make sure you have a good map and a plan before you head out, if you only have a day. Enjoy! It's a phenomenal city!
