Budapest/Croatia

Hello,
we will be traveling to Budapest in September. We want to go to Zagreb after our time in Budapest. Any suggestions on how to get there? I'd love to spend some time on the river but can't seem to find a cheap way to travel on the water.

Katerina There are some boats that go south out of Budapest down the Danube and off towards the Black Sea; and while going south on the Danube might get you a tad closer to Zagreb as you approach the Serb border, I dont think there is a navigable river route to Zagreb from Budapest. If you just want to see the river you could go up from Budapest to Vienna and then fly. But i understand that the stretch of river from Budapest to Vienna isnt the most scenic in the world. There are trains from Budapest to Zagreb and thats how most folks make the trip. If you find something more exciting please write back and share it. James

We went by train. Left early,6:30 and arrived just before 1400. No changes and the price was good. Check the DB website for schedule.

I traveled from Budapest to Zagreb via train. I took the early morning train and arrived around 13:30 (approximately 61/2 -7 hrs). It stops near the border for border control check. It is cheaper to purchase the ticket at the ticket counter in Budapest. I purchased mine at Keleti Station. The agent told me it was cheaper to buy a round trip ticket than a one way. I paid 8850 forints for the round trip ticket last October.

Great info! Thanks for the input. The train sounds like the way to go.
