booking ferries in Greece

We are travelling the Greek islands in mid-Sept for 3 weeks. Want to take the night ferry to Crete, then major Cyclades islands. Should we pre-book or wait til we get there? I don't want to get stuck somewhere...

By mid-September demand will have decreased significantly so pre-booking isn't necessary.
