My husband & I will be spending about 2 weeks in Greece at the end of June/beginning of July. The helpline has talked us out of squeezing in a trip to Turkey and spending our whole time in Greece. We are avid hikers and bicyclers - can anyone give advice about great day hikes in Greece (Peloponnese area or islands - right now we're learning towards Santorini, Naxos, maybe Samos)or, if it's not incredibly dangerous, bicycling day trips? Thank you!
On Santorini you can take the 3-4 hour hike along the cliffs between Fira and Oia. You can also take the 2-3 hour hike between Perissa Beach and Kamari Beach that passes by Ancient Thera at the summit of the mountain that separates these two beaches.
The Samaria Gorge on Crete is very popular, takes a full day including transportation to the trail head and then transportation back from the end of the trail, which includes a ferry ride to the village where you catch the bus back to the beginning.

Mark Dubin writes a lot on Greece and did various books on walking there. They are pretty old now but the basics are still useful and, for example, his 'Greece on Foot' can be picked up on the US Amazon for $4 second hand.
There's a very good site in English by a Belgian guy - Raymond Verdoolaege - which covers a number of islands.

Raymond is very knowledgeable and meticulous and so his site is well worth a look.
In my experience not many people cycle in Greece. The mountains, and the traffic, may have something to do with it!
