There will be lots of taxis at the port waiting to take passengers to Ephesus. That's the best and fastest way to reach the ruins. The distance is no more than 10 miles so it won't take more than 30 minutes.

Thanks for info--how much should I expect to pay for taxi? Will they wait for me for return, if so, how much should this service cost?

We took a private tour so don't know the cost of a taxi. There is also bus service which is cheap, cheap. The taxis should drop you at the top (so you can walk downhill) and at bottom you will find dozens of taxi waiting to take you back. No problem.
