We have a group of 6 women leaving Sofia around the end of July, and only have one week before we have to fly home from Dubrovnik. We are hesitant about traveling by van or train through the regions in between, but flying seems circuitous and expensive. We would like to have enough time around Dubrovnik to see an island or two. Any advice much appreciated! (None of us has been to Croatia before, and only one of us has been to Bulgaria before.)

I'm afraid yours is an impossible quest. If you look at the map there is no easy way to get from A to B. The only thing I can suggest is Sofia to Belgrade then onto Sarajevo and then Dubrovnik. And this would be the easy route. I've done the reverse journey from Dubrovnik to Kotor and then Ulcinj in Montenegro followed by Tirana, Albania and then through Lake Ohrid and Skopje before getting to Sofia. I would not recommend this route unless you are an experienced traveler and have time. If you must get to Dubrovnik, fly. Check other cities if it is cheaper such as Zagreb. You can then take the train but it will still be a long journey.
