Best transport between Prague and Vienna - train or bus?? or Plane

Which is preferable for amount of time, cost and sights seen between Prague and Vienna? What websites should I view to purchase tickets? Is it even worth it to consider flying?

Mike, Time - train Cost - usually buses are cheapter but take far longer Sights seen - On the train - not a whole lot between the two cities except some smaller towns that looked like they had seen better days. I took the train from Vienna to Prague last year. Book it through Deutsch Bahn. I called their office in the UK and had the ticket mailed to myself. You have to switch trains near the boarder and can only get the train ticket for the Czech Republic within 60 days (if I recall correctly). Prague is Praha Don't recall which station is centrally located but the Deutsch Bahn person who help me know them.

I would not consider flying. There are many trains between Prague and Vienna. The easiest is to buy ticket once you are in Prague. Train takes little over 4.5 hours. Most trains are direct to Vienna. The best scenery is between Chocen (station after Pardubice but most train don't stop there) and Brno. Don't expect Switzerland. It's more rolling hills, some small rivers, before Brno a lot of tunnels. Or you can take Yellow Bus (Student Agency) little less than 5 hours. Most of the way is on freeway. Bus is cheaper.

the train is pretty empty when i took it last sep, so you should have no problem buying ticket a couple of days ahead of time. the bus station in prague has about 6 or 7 companies listed together. they are about the same, but different schedule. you may want to buy 1 or 2 days in advance just to be sure. it can be more crowded because its cheaper. no need to fly - the 2 places are very close.

I vote for taking the bus. Bus is much cheaper with only about 30mins tacked on to the travel time in comparison to the train. Flying is way too expensive and the time spent on both airports & flying is more than taking the train or bus.

I most recently did this a couple years ago. Train is faster and a smoother. No need to switch trains and you can by tickets right before leaving Prague at train station, or at least when you arrive in Prague. Bus will save you a few pennies, but will cost you in extra time and comfort. The ride on train is like 4-4.5 hours. Bus is between 5-6 hours depending on company and schedules.
