best time of year to visit Turkey

When is the best time of year to visit Turkey? What are the most important sights to see? Who has traveled there with Rick Steve's tour group?

I am going to assume that you already have a copy of RS Istanbul Guide Book which has lots of information about Istanbul and the surrounding area. You can find the average temperatures on Page 380 of that guide book with a web site reference to get more detailed weather. We took the RS 13 day Turkey Tour from May 24 thru June 5th (or there abouts) this year. This is our 9th RS tour. We also found the Lonely Planet guide book for Turkey very helpful.

I went in early to mid-May and the weather was just about perfect. If you go during the summer, most of the southern areas (including Ephesus) can get extremely hot. Even in May, Ephesus was starting to get uncomfortably hot.

There are hundreds of sights worth seeing in Turkey. Many of them are in Istanbul, so I would definitely put that on your list. Cappadocia is another popular region, as it has very interesting and diverse scenery, and much history. Ephesus is a must-see, and if you like beaches, the Turkish Riviera is incredibly beautiful.

I haven't gone on his tour (or any other for that matter), so I can't help you there. For sightseeing information, you can look at my blog at http://mardeeinturkey.wordpress.com - I was there in 2007.

Last September our RS tour experienced several days of rain. Temperatures were great (70's). Fantastic experience with the tour.
