Best time of year to visit Czech Republic

It depends where in C.R. you want to go and what you want to do. Generally I would compare weather there to weather in Vermont. Sometimes toward the end of May could be already hot, beginning of May morning frost. In July and August Prague is less crowded and prices of accommodation are lower. But countryside is more crowded because most people have their vacation then. Which part of C.R. you want to visit?

In most of central Europe my absolute favorite time is the first half of October. March while chilly has had the most vivid blue skies. But to make it a little broader I enjoy April, May, September and October the most for a general visit. The weather is best and the rates are a little lower on these shoulder months. December is also great for the Christmas markets and snow. My experience has been that the tourist crunch is at its peak in July and August. The sights in Prague are in such compact areas that if you hit the high season it will look like Disney Land main street. The other issue with the summer months is that Europeans don't appreciate air conditioning the way we do. Picture a world at 85F, little breeze and no A/C

Jane, As the others have mentioned, where you'll be travelling in the Czech Republic will have a bearing on the best time to travel. While it may be less crowded in July and August, it will also be warmer. I've been there in mid-September and while it was a bit crowded, I didn't find that to be a huge problem. The weather was great at that time, so touring around Prague was very comfortable. Happy travels!
