Best Time of Day to Visit the Acropolis

We will be in Athens 21-Sep-11. I think Rick recommends not going to the Acropolis first thing in the morning because the place is mobbed with tour groups. Do you agree?

Yes, and not just because of the crowds. Athens can be really hot, even in September.

Hank I hate to disagree with Lee but I would go first thing. The site opens at 8 and it won't get any emptier or any cooler. Closing time is 19.30 so I suppose the alternative is to go early evening. Late September is a nice time to be in Greece. We'll be in Andros then ourselves. Cheers Alan

Just there a month ago and we were a little later going and did not arrive till about 9 and it was jam packed and SO hot. I was afraid of being shoved down those marble steps... however, I think if we had been there about 7:30 we could have been in first and had less of a crowd. It was still really hot at the end of the day so i can't say that would have been better. But, it was amazing.

My mistake for reading too fast! I meant yes, definitely go in the morning!

I was with a tour group. We went about 9 am, and it was not very crowded, but our trip was in late April. I probably would recommend going later in the day. It may be hot whenever you go in September. Weather is always a tossup.

During the summer the earlier you get to the Acropolis the better. I like to take photos w/o a lot of people around and thus prefer to get to a site when they open.
