My fiancee and I are planning to honeymoon in Slovenia this June. As of right now, I'm leaning towards selecting a homebase in the Julian Alps for day trips. Bled looks absolutely beautiful, but I'm worried about being overrun by tourists, etc.
Any suggestions on a romantic homebase (incl. Bled) would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your help, B.
I think there are very few roads through most of the Julian Alps which could make it a difficult location for day trips. What kinds of destinations were you considering?
The best place for a base really does depend on what day trips you were planning to do. A car can be a pain in Bled, but you'll need one to reach most places in the Julian Alps and the Karst area. Lake Bovec is very pretty and more remote, but there are less choices for lodging, restaurants, etc.
I was in Bled last June, and there were no crowds to speak of then. I think that most of the crowds don't show up until the very last few days of June and into July, after the kids there are out of school. Bled also has easy highway access for some of those longer day trips.
Sorry!!! I meant so say that Lake Bohinj is more undeveloped than Bled. Bovec is another possible base, though.
