We are traveling to Croatia Late May/beg of June. We will be flying into Dubrovnik and going up the coast to istria / slovenia. We have 2 days to spend on the beach. We are aware that the beach is not sand, but still want some time to soak up the rays and swim. Our entire trip is 14 days, but we only have two alloted to the beach, so that includes all travel time. Ie, we want something that is accessable and easy to get to. we looked at HVAR, but it seems that we will be spending more transportation on the ferry than the actual beach. Brela does seem like an nice option since it is already on our way from Dubrovnik to Split. Please share your ideas!
I can only speak for the beaches at/ around Dubrovnik. The beach at Boninovo cove, below the Bellevue Hotel, is a nice pebble beach. A sandy beach, Sunj Beach, at Lopud island which is about 45 mins by ferry from Dubrovnik ... and another half hour walk from the port on Lopud. It has a beach bar and the water is shallow quite a way out from shore. There are rocky beaches and a refreshing salt pool on Lokrum island, 15 mins by regular ferry from Dubrovnik's Old Port. Bring sandals or swim shoes for the pebbly beaches!
Hi Daniel,
We spent one night in Trogir and thought that it was a lovely coastal town. It's about a 45 minutes bus ride from Split.
Keep in mind that transportation is time consuming in Croatia, whether by bus or ferry, I suggest being conservative, figuring losing most of a day for a hop from one area to another.
As for beaches, Hvar is nice for rocky, pebble coves, you can get there as easily by going through Split and taking a 1 hour ferry to the island.
We did not hit the beaches in Korcula, but I will add to a previous post, while an island, it is able to be reached by bus or car easily, it is only separated from the mainland by a narrow channel and there are nearly hourly car and passenger ferries and boats that take only a few minutes (15 to 30 maybe) however, to continue north means either a ferry or backtracking down the peninsula to get to the main road.
For what it is worth, on the mainland just across from Korcula town at Orebic is a highly regarded sandy beach.
Another option, though I have not been there, is Prapratno beach at Ston. It is sandy, and Ston is a nice stop on the way from Dubrovnik. They also farm mussels and Oysters in the area, so eating is good if that appeals to you.
