Bedbugs in Santorini

We have booked 3 nights at the Hotel Filotera Villas that is noted in the Rick Steves book on Greece. Now I see a post in the Tripadvisor that a family had problems with bedbugs that she documented with photos. Well, my wife says no way so my question is have others had problems with the varmets at other hotels on the island ?

Bed bugs are becoming quite common. There have been outbreaks in New York, for instance. I have stayed at hotels that have been cited for a bedbug incident on tripadvisor without problems. What you really want to know is how the hotel staff reacted.

Michael, The situation must have changed since last year, as I had no problems at all with Bedbugs during my stay in Santorini. The Hotel I used was in Fira on the main road. I arranged the reservations through one of the Greek travel agencies recommended on Matt Barrett's website, and was pleased with the choices they provided. As the others have mentioned, Bedbugs seem to be an increasing problem lately in many places, including the U.S. It's always a bit of a gamble when choosing Hotels, as one never knows which one might be having an "infestation" at the time. Even five-star luxury Hotels can have this problem, so the only sure way to avoid this is not to travel. Good luck!

I wrote to the owner of Filotera Villas in Oia, Santorini. In spite of photographic evidence to the contrary taken by the guest who reported the problem, the owner still refuses to acknowledge that he has a problem. Consequently I think it is a good idea to avoid this hotel until there is no longer a threat of infestation. Hopefully he'll come to his senses quickly, although I'm doubtful since admitting it will mean losing business for him to do so. Ironically it will mean losing more business if he does not.

I will cancel the reservation this weekend and book at another hotel in Oia. Too bad. Sounds like a nice place with a reasonable price. I realize it is a problem in varios places but lke someone said, it is the response you are looking for.

Be sure to mention why you are cancelling, so he knows it relates to the problem and his refusal to admit it. Some others that are reasonably priced in Oia: Old Oia Houses, Villa Kallisti, Chelidonia Villas, Lena's House, Lucky Homes, Golden Sunset Villas. Lauda Hotel is also a good option but you have to call them for a reservation as they don't offer internet booking. You might also like to know that there is a very nice public-access pool in Oia, the Lioyerma Cafe/Pool, that is free as long as you buy food and/or drinks. http://www.lioyerma.gr
