Hey y'all, I'm going to be in Dubrovnik in late September, 2012 -- the last leg of the Adriatic tour. I'm thinking it might be nice to see a bit of Montenegro whilst I'm there. Any insights, suggestions?
(Not a Brit, but I do love typing the word 'whilst'! :-)
Hi Ross --
The Bay of Kotor is spectacular. I highly recommend some time on the coast of Montenegro. If you are coming to the Denver curmudgeons meeting on Saturday at Panera, I can bring some pictures to show you! Let me know.
I resent being included in the 'curmudgeons'. Two things to allow time for in Kotor: 1) Hike up to the Fort on the hill (allow 2 hours) RT if in shape. Great views that can't be beat 2) A swim in the bay Try not to rush a visit to Kotor - try and spend at least 1 night here.
We were there for only a few hours as a stop on a cruise this past October. It was an extremely rainy day, but the rain let up so we did make it in to town. We did not have the chance to climb the mountain behind the town, but I very much regret it -- because I love that sort of thing. The town is nice but more ramshackle that others in the region due to an earthquake some years back. The main church is great, you should definitely seek it out. The bay itself is very beautiful, even more so on a sunny day I am sure. Worth going to, though it is not that easy to get to. I would suggest two nights and one full day.
There are several small little towns along the drive to Kotor. There are two monasteries in the middle of the lake (Island of St. George & Our Lady of the Rocks) that might be worth checking out if you have a car. I took a bus from Dubrovnik and it went straight to Kotor. The trip took 3 hours one way so I only had two hours there before catching the only return bus to Dubrovnik. I ran and up the fortress in 45 minutes. Nice views but a tough hike. I would recommend spending a night there. Also, 12 miles south of Dubrovnik is the resort town Cavtat. It was a nice getaway!
Atlas Tours offers a nice day trip to Montenegro that includes 3 or 4 stops. Departs at about 7:00am and returns at about 7:00pm. Runs around 3 times a week. Book at their office near the Pile Gate.
Thanks y'all for all the great feedback!
I second Frank's recommendation for Atlas tour. It was a nice day trip down to Montenegro. Beautiful country and that little taste of it has made me want to go back for a much more extended stay!
