We have a long layover in Athens ( 11 hours). Does this airport have dayrooms? Any inexpensive hotels closeby? Our flight leaves between 1 and 2 AM. Ouch!
Thanks for your help. Susan
Susan
I'm not aware of any dayrooms, and the airport hotel is pricey.
On the other hand the metro takes 40 minutes to central Athens, and runs every half hour.
There's left luggage at the airport and so you''d easily have time to leave your luggage, get the metro to Monastiraki station, and have a late afternoon / early evening eating under the Acropolis.
Cheers
Alan
I agree, head to the Plaka, wander around, see the Acropolis, have a great meal and some wine, then back to the airport. You really have plenty of time.
I agree with Alan & Paul & I can suggest a very good place to eat in walking distance from the Monastiraki metro station. Taverna Platanos, 4 Diogenous Street in the Plaka neighborhood. It's a charming old family run place with excellent Greek food and wonderful outdoor tables under the plane trees. When you exit the metro station, just ask a local or two and they'll steer you to it.
Hi Susan,
There is a very nice Sofitel right in the airport. But, as others have indicated it is quite expensive. I don't think that there any others close by.
15 minutes away by taxi is the St. Thomas B&B

And Peri's Hotel
There's also a Holiday Inn on Attika Avenue, about 20 minutes from the airport, and they offer free shuttle service.
Last time I was there, they had two airports. Be sure you know which one you will be in.
That must have been a long time ago. There is only the one airport now that handles both domestic and international air traffic, located about 45 minutes outside of Athens.
I am doing a report on greece and I would like to learn more about the physical geography. Can you help me?
