But if you mean within the city: it depends on how many hours you have. The Acropolis and the National Archeological Museum and the Agora.

I agree, the Acropolis is the absolute must see.
If you get a metro from Piraeus to Monastiraki, turn right out of the station and right again onto Adrianou, you can walk up through the Agora to the Acropolis.
You can then walk down the other side of the hill through the Theatre of Dionysos the birthplace of Greek, and therefore all western, theatre.
You are then opposite the new Acropolis museum.
If you have time you can get a metro from the Acropolis station, just on the corner here, to Victoria (change at Omonia) which is a five minute walk from the National Archaeological Museum.
A metro from Victoria will take you right back to Piraeus.
Have fun.
Alan
PS Piraeus to Monastiraki takes around 20 minutes and Victoria back to Piraeus about 30. Trains are very frequent. Every ten minutes or so during the day and evening.
And when are the Elgin Marbles going to be installed in the new Acropolis Museum?
Kent
Unfortunately I think it will be a long wait until the Parthenon Marbles are back in Athens.
Restoring them was a manifesto commitment by the incoming New Labour government in 1997, but one they ignored once in power.
The British establishment's intransigence on the issue seems to have hardened since then, despite the wonderful new Acropolis museum.
Those who are interested in seeing them returned to their rightful place might be interested in this link.
