If you want to see a few islands on the way to Santorini then take a conventional car ferry so you can walk around outside on the decks. The highspeed ferries are enclosed with little or no outside deck space depending on which one you take. Flying takes 30 minutes. The conventional ferry takes 8 hours. the highspeed ferry takes 5 hours.

If you are only going to Santorini, I would definitely fly.

When I said, "If you want to see....." I did not mean stay on the other islands, but only look at them when the ferry makes stops at them. Decide if spending the money for a flight is more-or less-important than the time it takes to make the trip by ferry.

I'd fly. The ferry ride can be really rough and I'd rather spend my time exploring Santorini. That said you will waste a certain amount of time at the airport etc.

Fly one way - ferry the other. If you book in advance and online the airfare can be very reasonable.

I got a round trip ticket on Aegean airlines for same price as ferry. Ferry takes hours, airplane takes minutes. If you stop at islands with ferry it is just for a few minutes. Not worth it.
