We arrive in Athens at 1pm. Our plan is to go directly to Hydra. Therefore, we were thinking of taking the airport bus to the ferry port. We are traveling with three children. Do those buses have bathrooms on them?
The bus I took from the airport to the port (the bus recommended in Rick's guidebook) had no bathroom. It was a regular city bus and not a motor coach.
Thanks. I'm thinking it would be quicker and easier to just take a taxi.
Lucy, I wasn't sure if you had checked this website, but thought I'd mention it... http://www.athensinfoguide.com/arrival_airportopiraeus.htm You might be able to also find some good information on the excellent http://www.greecetravel.com/ (Maybe George the famous Taxi Driver will be available???) Hydra is beautiful but plan on buying bottled water there as the tap water is dreadful (tasted like diesel fuel)! Happy travels!
Thanks Ken. Good info. I'll take a look at those websites.
Lucy The airport to Piraeus bus can take 90 minutes, depending on traffic. An hour is more common. As Frank says doesn't have a toilet. It costs 5 euros an adult and 2.50 euros for children. There is a set rate for taxis to central Athens which is 35 euros during the daytime. As far as I know there is no set rate for Piraeus but this site gives 47 euros, which sounds about right http://www.athensairporttaxi.com/ The other option is to go by metro. This would cost around 25 euros for all of you. There is a 40 minute ride to Monastiraki where you change lines for Piraeus which is then 20 minutes. No toilets on the metro trains either. The advantage is that the point where you change trains is right under the Acropolis and you could break your journey by coming up and having lunch. Of course this might not be so easy with kids and luggage in tow! Have a great trip. Alan
Thanks for the info Alan!
