Athens taverna with traditional music

Any ideas on tavernas that have decent food along with enjoyable entertainment...bouzouki and traditional dancing ? We don't want a place where there's a lot of smoke, nor do we want a place that will force us to pay a hefty cover charge or make us buy a 100euro+ bottle of whiskey to share with a crowd. We are going in May and staying near the Acropolis metro. Thanks

It would be worth your while looking around Psirri, an area of clubs and restaurants just the other side of Ermou from Monastiraki metro station. Various tavernas there have live music, and certainly there is informal dancing when guests are in the mood.

Walking around in the middle of Sunday afternoon, certainly in the winter, you'll find a lot of places where people are combining Sunday lunch with dancing on tables!

I don't know it personally but this looks as though it might be worth a look

Even if you don't like the look of it there are plenty of other places in the area. While prices are a bit pricier here than in Plaka the food is generally better and the atmosphere more Greek.

If you are staying in a hotel, ask the concierge your questions. He should be able to recommend a taverna nearby.

Last October I stayed at "The Art Gallery Hotel" which is just below the Akropolis two streets up from the Metro station.
Try Taberna H Kypa (taverna ee kee-ra) at 12 Zefxidos Street. It is owned by Kostas and Mareia Detsi. She is English married to a lovely Greek man. Wonderful food, very reasonalbly priced, traditional music every weekend. Phone 210-922-1824. We became friends so please be sure to tell them Satyavati sent you!!

Sorry. Not much chance of escaping cigarette smoke anywhere in Greece!

Greece is WONDERFUL. Have a great time!

That sounds great. My map shows a couple of Zefxidos Streets. Can you give more idea of the location? Is it the one near the 1st Cemetery.

I'm in Athens in March and staying near the Art House, so would like to check the taverna out.

If I make it I'll tell them you sent me!

Thanks

Unfortunately, you will not be able to escape the smokers in Greece. At least in May you definitely will be sit outdoors, which should help a little.
