2 adult daughters and mother want to spend 2-3 nights in Athens and 6-7 nights in Santorini next Oct. Need suggestions for lodging & how to get to Santorini from Athens.
We stayed at the Electra Palace in the plaka and were very happy with the selection.
I would suggest that you fly to Santorini - check Aegean Airlines. They can be very reasonable when booked early. The flight is only about one hour long. The other option is a ferry. On Santorini, we stayed in Oia which I highly recommend.
You might want to consider four nights in Santorini and use the other three for Naxos. Then, take the ferry for the return trip to Athens.
Check www.tripadvisor.com for lodging ideas.
I would fly to Santorini, as a youngster we did the ferry route to Mykonos, which is closer then Santorini, and it seemed like a 6 to 8 hour hell ride.
Athens is ugly, get in see what you want and get out. Santorini is beautiful.
I second flying, which I believe is about the same price as a ferry. We were able to upgrade to a cabin on a Blue Star ferry, which was really nice. If you can't afford that though, the ferry rides are long, painful, overcrowded, etc as we endured on our ride back to Athens.
In Santorini, San Gorgio Villas hostel is the best hostel -and- hotel ever. Super nice people and such a good deal.
