We are going to be in Athens in December for 4 days and are planning 2 days in Athens for sightseeing. We would like to plan a day trip and were wondering if anyone has a suggestion. We are looking at the Delphi day trip, 1 day cruise to Aegina, Hydra & Poros or just a full day in Hydra. I know the weather is questionable that time of year. Any recommendations? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Delphi is an excellent choice. It's a stunning site and one of the most important ancient ruins in Greece. The setting is magnificent. The weather is likely to be decent, though up in the mountains could get more iffy. Can't comment about Hydra other than its the off-season and much may be shut down.
Michelle December is a good time to be in Greece, and I'm sure you'll have a good time. Delphi is really beautiful. I've been there in December and it was really cold and sleighting. The weather in December has been better the last few years, but be warned it can be changeable and especially going north and into the mountains you'd do well to be sure you have enough warm clothes. The one day tour of Delphi gives you an option of taking it with or without lunch. I'd definitely do the latter and take some sandwiches or snacks. The lunch on these trips is generally mediocre and you're likely to appreciate the extra time you can spend on the site or at the museum. I don't think I would do the three island trip. We spent a few days on Poros a few years back and the people on the trip had to really rush in and out. I'd probably choose one island and have more time there. I can't comment on Hydra, having never been, but we like Aegena. It's less scenic but has more Greek life. We often go for lunch from Athens if it's a nice December day. The hydrofoil only takes around 45 minutes each way. Alan
Thank you so much for the responses. They are very helpful. One more question in case anyone knows - we also found a tour to Mycenae, Epidaurus & Nafplion. Has anyone done that tour? We are considering that against the Delphi tour and are wondering if anyone has any recommendations? Thank you for your feedback!
Are you considering a tour which does Napflio, Epidavros, and Mycenae in one day? If so, it will be a punishingly long day. We just returned from Greece, and I'm remembering the drive between Athens and Napflio taking 2 hours. Stayed in Naplio for several days, one of which was devoted to Mycenae. We explored it on our own, but I think you can get guided tours for just that site. I'd check with tourist information. You don't really need a guide for Napflio. Epidavros looked interesting; but time constraints and visits to many archaeological sites in Turkey on this trip made us satisfied to put it on a future list. You can pm me if you have other questions.
Rosalyn is right, trying to do all three places in one day would be one looong day. And you wouldn't hardly get to see much of any one place. Nafplio is well worth its own overnight or two with day trips from there to the ancient sites. And Delphi is far more scenic than Myceanae or Epidavros.
Michelle I've done the Mycenae, Nafplio, Epidavrus tour. In fact we did it the same Christmas holiday we did the Delphi one day tour. I find it really difficult to choose between them. We've ended up going to all of the sites on both for longer periods. Delphi is definitely more spectacular but, given you have to choose, I would probably do the Peloponnese. It gives more variety which, if you don't have much time in Greece, is probably the decider. Also, Nafplio is a beautiful little town. My note above about not taking the inclusive lunch is also true of the Peloponnese tour. There are better options in Nafplio than the bland hotel dining room the tour will take you to. I don't know if you are looking at G.O. Tours or Chat but in my experience you can get cheaper deals if you book in Athens than if you use the web in advance. Especially in December there should be no problem about availability. Alan PS Whichever you choose I'd be making plans to come back to Greece and do the other! Or better still come for longer and spend a couple of nights in Delphi, or a few days in Nafplio.
