Athens in a day

from a cruise ship docked in Piraeus, what is the best way to get ourselves to Athens - we have one day & hope to see Acropolis, Agora,Archaeological Museum & La Plaka on our own - is museum close to Acropolis? Is Oracle of Delphi anywhere nearby to get to in this day?

If you don't want to take a 20-minute walk from the cruise ship dock to the Metro Station your other option is a taxi. They'll be waiting at your dock. Be sure the meter is set on Rate #1.

From the metro station at Piraeus you can get a metro to Monastiraki. They run every few minutes and the journey takes 20 minutes. A ticket is about a euro. As Lee says the metro station is about 20 minutes from where the cruise ships put in. You can get a cab into the centre but, given the traffic, I doubt it will be quicker than the metro.

Coming out of Monastiraki station, with the Acropolis above you on your right, turn right and then right into Adrianou and about five minutes down on your left is the entrance to the Agora.

Get a combined ticket and you can walk up through the Agora, into the Acropolis, down through the Theatre of Dionysus and straight across to the new Acropolis museum.

Coming out of the museum and bearing to the right of the Acropolis you can walk back down to Monastiraki through Plaka.

Make sure to look at the Thisseon temple, across to your right as you come into the Agora.

The Agora museum, to your left as you enter the site, is well worth a visit.

The oracle at Delphi will have to wait until another time. Delphi is about three hours north of Athens.

Have a good trip

Alan

PS Depending on how quickly you move the above could easily take most of a day, but if you have a bit more time I would recommend the Keramikos. Pass by the entrance to the Agora and walk for about ten minutes down past Thisseon metro and it's on your right. It has some beautiful graves statues and an excellent view back up to the Acropolis.

Debra, we were able to vist the Acropolis on our own from the cruise dock. Yes, it is a 20 minute walk from the dock to the Piraeus metro station. I think the cost was 1.40 Euro each way. Once you get to Monastiraki station in the Plaka area, you will see the Acropolis up on the hill. It takes about 10 mins to reach the entry gates.
