Athens Hotels-HELP PLEASE

Our plans for the Hotel Attalos are falling apart. We are now considering the King Jason on Omondia Square and the Oscar Hotel near the Larissa Train Station. We are looking for quiet, clean, safe area, near public transport at a price of 80 euros per double per night. Any thoughts on the King Jason or Oscar? Also, any thoughts on the Nafplia Hotel in Nafplion? Your help will be greatly appreciated! Happy New Year's!

The Nafplia is a nice hotel. We've stayed there several times and the staff are friendly and helpful. It was refurbished about 18 months ago and I've not stayed there since but I assume this will have made it better rather than worse! The only downside, to be really picky, is that it is about 5 minutes walk from the edge of the old town. (I'm assuming you mean the Nafplia rather than the Nafplia Palace which is much grander.)

Another more traditional place in the old town is the Acronafplia. There's a range of user comments here - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g319780-d621200-Reviews-Pension_Acronafplia-Nauplion_Peloponnese.html

I've never stayed in either hotel, but wouldn't really recommend the area. I don't want to overstate this, athens is still a really safe city, but Omonia is certainly an area you'll see a lot of street people, beggars etc. The station area is a bit far from the sites, although the metro is good.

Have you looked at the Phaedra? Again an older building, with smaller rooms, but in a great location with brilliant views. Other people's ideas here - http://www.travel-library.com/hotels/europe/greece/athens/hotel_phaedra.html

Another possibility, on the other side of the Acropolis but an easy and beautiful walk into Plaka, is the Austria. They may be slightly above your price range, but their site is a bit unfathomable! http://www.austriahotel.com/htmlsite/rates_reservation.htm

What happened with the Attalos?

Thanks everyone so far for your advice. The problem with the Attalos is the price range and the availability (98 euros for the remaining rooms). I'm looking for something in the 80 euro range. Any more tips? Thanks!

We stayed at both the Attalos and Hotel Cecil in Oct/Nov. The Cecil is fine. The rooms are a little smaller and no rooftop bar but is is only a few doors from the Attalos so you would be in the area you wanted.
