We are looking for affordable (80 euros or less per night) hotels in Athens and Nafplion. As long as the hotel is clean and in a safe neighborhood with an en suite bath that's all we asking for. Does anyone have any thoughts on clean & safe affordable hotels in Athens in Nafplion? We are considering the Hotel Tempi - Hotel Attalos - and Hotel Cecil in Athens and the Hotel Byron in Nafplion. Any thoughts on these hotels? Any negatives?
Also we are in need of transporation advice for getting from Athens to ancient Corinth to Nafplion (overnight here) and then on to Mycanea before returning to Athens. Is it better to use a bus or a train? How frequent are the busses and trains? Any other tips?
We will also be doing a cruise to Poros, Mykonos, Paros, and Sifnos. Any sightseeing tips for these islands? We prefer historical, archaleogical, and natural beauty sites.
Your help is greatly appreciated!

The Attalos and Tempi are both absolutely fine, and in a good area just outside Plaka (the main tourist area.) The Attalos is larger and more modern, with a rooftop bar with Acropolis views, while the Tempi is smaller, family run and on a pedestrian precinct. Depends what you like. I personally think the Cecil is slightly overpriced but it is in a nice renovated building and is to some people's taste.
Bus is the best way to get to Nafplio. Just under 3 hours and you go through Mycenae on the way down. In Corinth be sure to go to Acrocorinth, the fortress above the roman site. Climb high enough and you can see both end of the canal. You can generally get a taxi up from outside the roman site.
Never stayed in the BYron but it's in a nice position. There are, though, other cheaper options which are as nice. If you can wait a couple of weeks I can give you a couple of ideas. (I'm currently writing this on my laptop in Athens and don't have access to all my info!)

Dear Alan,
Thanks for the info! Your help is greatly appreciated. In regards to hotels, we are seeking a clean hotel, safe and affordable location. Expensive lobbies and fancy hotel restaurants are not necessary for us. If the hotel is close to public transportation (especially the metro/subway in Athens) that's a big advantage for us.
How often do the busses run from Athens to ancient Corinth, Nafplion and Mycanea? If you want to overnight in Nafplion but also visit ancient Corinth, Mycanea, and the theatre at Epidavros, how would you set up the schedule (leaving Athens early one morning and returning to Athens late the next evening)?
Also, any tips on Poros, Mykonos, Paros, and Sifnos?
If anyone had any tips, it will be greatly appreciated!

Regarding Paros. If you're on a budget I can't recommend Margarita's Studio apartments in Parakia too highly. Parakia is the main town. The apartments are run by Athimios and his lovely wife. They are clean, well furnished in a basic way, have good bathroom and shower and they are very affordable. They are self-catering and there is a really good supermarket just a couple of minutes walk away. For an evening meal in Parakia I really like 'The Hibiscus' friendly staff, a good menu and prices that won't break the bank, also if you go there before the sun sets you get to watch it fall into the sea from the resturant. Then if you need to hire a car, try Akropolis Cars on the main road along the seafront, good reliable small cars at small car prices. All cars are stick shift I'm afraid but they do drive on the right hand side of the road and traffic on the island moves very sedately and the roads are far from crowded.

Both the Attalos and Tempi would fit your bill. Both are clean and safe (as is the Cecil) with the Tempi having a more 'student' feel. Both are within 5 minutes walk of Monastiraki metro, which has a sirect train to and from the airport. (45 minutes, 10 euros for 2 people.)
Buses run Athens - Corinth - Mycenae - Nafplio about every hour and recent times are here: http://www.athensguide.com/practicalinfo/busschedulesA.htm.
A snag may be that the Corinth terminal is now outside the town. I've not gone into Corinth since this happened so don't know about connections from there.
Are you aware that there is now a direct train connection from the airport to corinth? This only takes 40 minutes and would save time going in and out if you can arrange your trip so as to do Athens at the end.
I'll get back re Nafplio apartments once I'm back home (in Brighton, UK) and have access to more information.
Now I have to go our and see the Christmas lights on the Acropolis!
Cheers Alan
Thanks to everyone for the info...I'm checking out the links. Any more thoughts?

We stay with family in Athens so not sure about hotels. Just one idea...take the bus to Corinth then rent a car. We did this on our last trip to Greece. Driving in this area is easy. Really - no problems at all. This will give you a lot of flexibility to visit sights on the way and close to Nafplion. Mycenae is a must as is the Epidaurus Theater (1/2 hour from Nafplion). We stayed at the Hotel Galini in Nafplion and loved it ($85 2 years ago). Nothing fancy but a great location. We walked and hiked around Palamide Castle - save a day for this. Wonderful experience! Enjoy :)
Thanks Shannon for the info and tips.
