Athens hotels

Anyone have great recommendations for Athens hotels?

The Hotel Carolina was a nice place to stay: about 3 blocks from Monastiraki Square, on a quiet street, with optional breakfast and an in-hotel internet cafe. Comfortable, reasonably priced (for Athens), with en-suite bathrooms, A/C, and very nice staff. I was lucky to get a room there on a couple of hours' notice when a girl with whom I was travelling booked us into the Athens International Youth Hostel, which is warned against on this site for very good reason. Never stay there. Seriously, though!

the St. George Lycabettus. *****

Its a 5 star on top of the highest point in the city with a view of the acropolis that is unmatched.

$200 a night back in late March.

Well worth it.

Very very safe neighborhood

I stayed at the Baby Grand Hotel (near Omonia Square)in Athens...very "unique" hotel...looks like the 1960's in the corridors, bird chirping CD plays during the day (in the corridor), the check in desk is a mini-cooper car, cut in half.

oh yes...and on the bed is (at first glance very life-like) a tiger skin. When I saw it, I immediately said "oh, no I'm a member of the Boston Animal Rescue League!"..and the staff person showed me it was a toy!

I still laugh when I think of that hotel, but it was clean and convenient...and very different than anything I have stayed it!

It all depends on what you are looking for i.e. price, location. We have just returned from Athens and can recommend both Hotel Attalos and Hotel Cecil. They are both on Athena St on the edge of the Plaka.

They are budget hotels but clean, and a great location with walking distance to the Plaka, the Acropolis and the Archeological Museum. Bot are recommended on Mike Barrett's web site. Our first choice would be Attalos as it has bigger rooms, better bathrooms and a rooftop bar overlooking the Acropolis.
