Are there any ferries directly to Rethymno, Crete? (04/03/09-04/10/09)
Is 67euros the best I could do from ATH->HER?
Flights are around 100 euros.
Are there any buses that would take me from HER to RETH?
Any suggestions for alternate/cheaper modes of transportation?

You will see here that on Friday, April 3 Lane Lines has a Friday evening departure from Piraeus to Rethymno at 7pm, arriving on Crete at 7:30 the next morning.
If you do opt to fly to Heraklion there is a bus to Rethymon. You can see the schedule here:

Hellenic Seaways also offers a highspeed ferry to Rethymno from Piraeus but this year's schedule isn't available yet. Last year this service began on March 21, so it's possible you'll be able to take that one instead if they offer it again.

I am not sure what y our 67€ refers to. I know that last year I inquired about fares to Crete on the overnite boat, with a cabin ticket -- for a berth in an all Female cabin for 4 w. ensuite bathroom. As I recall, the cost for that was 48€, which I considered pretty good since it would also be my hotel for the night.
