We would like to take the train from Volos (Greece) across Central Greece the third week in May but have heard some of the train lines may have been shut down. Are trains still running then and is there a way I can get route and schedule information? I have searched far and wide for this answer. Thanks, Janet
About the only major train line in Greece is the one between Athens and Thessaloniki (and perhaps on to Istanbul). Greece has never been very good with trains. They do have an extensive bus service, but that can be hard to navigate and many of the bus lines run to-from Athens. So it can be hard to go from city-to-city without Athens. Honestly, the most efficient way to see rural Greece is renting a car. If you choose to rent, you must have an International Drivers Permit. Roads are well marked in English and outside Athens, they are pretty lightly traveled.
Janet Douglas is right that the network is anything but extensive, and I would always favour buses. There are some trains from Volos though. Check out the timetable here http://www.trainose.gr/en May is a great time to be in Greece. Have a good trip (and drink a tsiporou on Volos harbour front for me!) Alan
Thanks Douglas and Alan for your replies and useful information. Getting more excvited about our trip by the minute! Janet
