Ancient Akrotiri on Santorini

Does anyone know if the ruins of Ancient Akrotiri have re-opened to the public? They were supposed to re-open in 2008 but my most recent guide books for 2010 can't say for sure and said to check with the tourist board. I have written the tourist board and checked every website I know of but can't get an answer. Anyone ever been there?

Akrotiri is still closed and will not reopen any time this year. Rumors about a reopening in 2011 are beginning to circulate but I'm not even sure if repairs have begun yet. Last fall the "powers that be" were still trying to find someone to take on the project.

Any update on when Akrotiri might reopen? I'm going to Santorini in late spring of this year and am crossing my fingers ...

Katherine, I haven't checked recently, but given the current financial situation in Greece, I also doubt that Akrotiri will be re-opening this year. It was still closed when I was last there in 2010. You might find some current information on This Website. You could also send an E-mail to the author of the site, as he's VERY knowledgeable about Greece. Happy travels!

I read that the architect of the new protective roof covering said at a lecture on January 26 that Akrotiri will open this summer, but no date was mentioned.

Is Santorini still worth the visit without Akrotiri being open?

Carly -- Santorini has to be one of the most beautiful places on the face of the Earth! It is not only gorgeous, but relaxing and a great place to go. We are visiting for the thrid time this summer. Our first time in 2000 included a visit to Akrotiri; the last time, 2010, it was of course still closed, but we had a marvelous time. This summer, we hope to see Akrotiri again, but if not, so be it. We will love our visit to Santorini either way. Jan
