Is it a bad idea to do a week in Croatia alone? I also want to add on a few days in Italy. A friend who is about as savvy but higher maintenance than I spent a week in Amsterdam alone and was just fine. Any suggestions?

No it is not a bad idea. I did it alone a few years back and I think Croatia is much more popular not. I had a wonderful time.
