Air Conditioning in Cappadocia late summer?

We will have three nights in Goreme, Cappadocia, checking in Aug. 31 and out on Sept. 3, and would appreciate advice on whether we should book a room with air conditioning. Average highs in the area that time of year are low 80s, but record highs are mid 90s. We're looking at a cave hotel ... we could have a room with a lovely, large private terrace OR a room with air conditioning. Not both, within our budget. I would love the terrace but don't do well in heat. Thus the dilemma. If you've been there at that time of year, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Charlene
My husband and I were in Goreme the second week of September in 2011 - it was very hot (mid 90s) during the day but at night it was cool (and one night, actually cold- I was shivering!). We too stayed in a cave hotel, and the cave walls keep it very cool (to the point we were actually under blankets.) Thus I personally don't think you'd need air conditioning and would choose the room with the terrace. One other comment: in case you don't know, almost every hotel is a "cave hotel" so don't pay extra high prices b/c you think you are staying somewhere special. Many many hotels in that town had rooms hewn out of the rock formations. We too stayed in a cave hotel and I recommend it. Brenda

Hi Charlene,
As Brenda also suggested, you definitely do not need an air conditioned room as long as the hotel is actually built with local stone (yellow stone which acts as a natural climate control!) or is a cave room. For more premium selection of hotels, actually boutique hotels, I would suggest you Uchisar which is a smaller but more preserved town just 5min drive to goreme and 10min to Urgup.

Thank you both. This is our first trip to this part of Turkey, and we have a lot to learn!

We stayed in the Cappodocia area, 1-1/2 years ago. We were there in June and it was disagustingly hot. Definitely get a hotel with a/c. We hated the smoke and smelley people so much, that we cut our two night stay there to one night. The area was so hot and dirty, we hated it. We had arranged a two day tour, with shuttle and hotel included. It was a disaster. Even the car that picked us up at the airport, didn't offer a/c. I got so sick from all the smoking over there. They are just dirty people and rude. Nobody spoke any kind of English either. We did enjoy the hot air baloon. It was very dangerous getting out of the baloon ride though. Turkey doesn't believe in safety protection for their visitors.
