I will be travelling to Tallinn, Helsinki, and St Petersburg and may have an extra day or half day in one of those cities. I grew up on a farm and I was thinking it might be interesting to visit some local agricultural sites.
On a trip to Ireland a few years ago I had the opportunity to spend a couple hours on a Saturday at a small local Livestock Auction yard and it was one of the highlights of my trip but definitely not a "tourist" attraction.
I've searched the site here; LonelyPlanet; the city tourist information sites, and some other sites, and I've mostly found agritourismo's, farm-stays, and "Farm tour's" (which are full-blown organized trips).
I'm just looking for a short tour(1-4 hours), and maybe not even an organized tour, but just a place that would be interesting to visit, like the livestock auction, or maybe a cheese factory, smokehouse, butcher shop, woollen mill; grain harvester, timber or logging operation, or a small working farm, dairy, brewery.
Some of the Open air museums seem interesting and kind of what I'm looking for; but I'd prefer something that was a working operation.
Any ideas on where I might find anything?
