Advice on Maribor, Slovenia & travel in northern Croatia

I need suggestions on places to stay in Maribor. My friend & I will not be driving, so walking distance from the train/ bus station is important. We will be visiting in July. We will be traveling via the capital from 4 days in northern Croatoa. I will rent a car there and am thinking 1 day Zagreb & the remaining days visiting Plitvice, but would like suggestions for either the Istria peninsula or Zadar. I want one day to just relax on a beach on the Adriatic. I know it is a whirlwind trip, but we want to make the most efficient use of our time. Thanks much.

3 days in Plitvice? We went there last summer. We arrived at the park when it opened (8:30 AM), walked every path, took breaks, and really enjoyed it. We amazingly chose Croatian National Day to visit, so the park was crazy-busy. We were done by 2 PM, and ready to leave. That is with my wife who is not a fast walker. 3 days seems like total overkill for PL, which I considered the absolute best thing we did on our trip. There are other things in the locale as well, but I don't see three days. We did not spend enough time in Zagreb nor in Ljubljana. I would spend 2 days in Zagreb or at the beach.

Thanks, I guess I wasn't very clear. I meant three days total for the non-Zagreb portion. I think a day trip to Plitvice and then 2 other days in either Zadar or on the Istrian Peninsula. I am re-thinking renting a car if the bus schedules are good.

We were in a car, so I don't know about buses. I do know that PL is pretty remote, on a smallish 2-lane road through the mountains. On the positive side, it is a huge draw throughout central Europe. Since you are on a tight time schedule, spending time waiting on public transport may not be satisfying. If you can afford it, and wish to maximize productive time, I'd get the car, but we all have different priorities. I will say that some drivers in that area were insane in their passing on the narrow roads.
